About The Position

This is a Per Diem position with an hourly wage range of $26.70 to $44.00, plus a 15% Per Diem differential. The Chaplain provides spiritual presence, counsel, guidance, and coordination to patients, their families, and Good Shepherd staff who request such support. The Chaplain makes on-call visits as requested by the department manager or nursing supervisor, records work in the digital record (EPIC), and assures that pastoral care is integrated into the overall plan of care.

Requirements

  • Written endorsement of the board of elders/session/council of a local congregation where the applicant is a member.
  • Maintains relationships characterized by mutual support, open communication, trust, and respect.
  • Able to help patients, family, and staff reflect on their experiences from a theological or faith perspective without imposing personal bias.
  • Able to assess and respond sensitively to cultural and religious diversity.
  • Computer literacy commensurate with use of EPIC, electronic medical record for charting patient/family interventions.
  • Flexibility with on-call scheduling to meet department needs including overnight, weekends, and holidays.
  • Willingness to travel to receive specialized training appropriate to 'best practice' of Soul Care.
  • Past training in grief counseling, hospice volunteering, Critical Incident Stress Management, and Stephen’s Ministry.

Responsibilities

  • Provides short term care in the Emergency Department and as needed on the units.
  • Works in collaboration with a patient’s AREA MINISTER to enhance the hospital visit or stay.
  • Coordinates the planning and provision of Chaplain services for patients/families to positively augment their visit with a focus on spiritual well-being.
  • Records significant elements of pastoral encounters and ensures timely EPIC documentation integrated into the patient’s plan of care.
  • Reports to Chaplain Services Manager and, during evenings, weekends, holidays, and manager paid time off, also to the Nursing Supervisor as scheduled and needed.
  • Assists department manager and/or Resilience Education and Peer Support (REPS) Lead in addressing employee secondary trauma in the event of a critical incident.
  • Attends four (4) hours/monthly professional chaplain training.
