About The Position

The Chaplain works with all hospital departments and personnel to provide spiritual guidance and emotional support during illness, injury and/or emergency to patients, family members, visitors, hospital staff, and physicians. As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the Chaplain advocates for a patient- and family-centered approach in all decisions and actions and demonstrates caring and empathy in all interactions. Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college and/or university and an ATS accredited Seminary, Divinity, or Rabbinic School, or equivalent graduate and post-graduate studies as determined by APC.
  • Master of Divinity is preferred.
  • Learning indicative of readiness to engage the objectives of Level 1 and/or Level 2 CPE.
  • Qualified lay pastoral experience with sanctioned perquisite preparation commensurate with the normative beliefs, practices, and authorization processes of a faith group, order, etc. with good standing.
  • Pastoral License, ordination, and/or orders completed or in process.
  • Current faith group, ecclesiastical, and religious endorsement.
  • Good oral/written communication and interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills.
  • Empathetic, objective listening; ability to relate ecumenically; religious knowledge; Teach ability; Collegial in approach; ability to meet diverse pastoral needs including sacramental/sacerdotal; conduct religious worship, use educational supervision/consultation effectively, organize and conduct services and patient visitation, ability to learn in an action-reflection, experiential, teaching model.
  • Propensity or skill with use of pagers, computer word processing, information systems, inter/intranet navigation, telephones, fax, copying, adding machine, calculator, communication and broadcast systems, basic office equipment, audio-visual, assessment tools specific to the department and basic use of information technology.
  • A minimum of three (3) years, post-seminary pastoral experience or significant, commendable experience in a process authorized ecclesiastically that required sustained, pastoral activity.
  • Documented effectiveness as a pastoral care practitioner of at least a year.
  • Ideally, completion of an ACPE unit of Level 1 CPE. Familiarity with and propensity for experiential education, including ability to manage crises, and work as an effective team member.

Responsibilities

  • Provide visitations and spiritual support to patients, family members, and employees.
  • Serve as a liaison to community churches and clergy members on behalf of the hospital, including the coordination of patient visits.
  • Participate on hospital Ethics Committee.
  • Provide assistance with crisis intervention measures where appropriate.
  • Provide guidance with advanced directives and ethical issues of patients and families.
  • Formulate programs and policies to meet the spiritual needs of the organization.
