About The Position

The Chaplain-PRN position at Duke Raleigh Hospital involves providing comprehensive pastoral care and spiritual support to patients, families, and staff. This role is essential in addressing the spiritual needs of individuals in high-stress environments, such as hospitals and hospice care, and includes counseling, crisis intervention, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams.

Requirements

  • Master of Divinity or equivalent degree.
  • Completion of one year's residency in Clinical Pastoral Education for Level I.
  • Six months of pastoral ministry experience in a church or institution for Level I.
  • Completion of a second year residency in Clinical Pastoral Education for Level II.
  • Three years of experience as a clinical chaplain for Level II.
  • Eligible for certification as 'Board Certified Chaplain' by the Association of Professional Chaplains for Level I.
  • Denominational Endorsement for Level I.
  • Clinical membership in the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc (preferred) for Level II.

Nice To Haves

  • Skills in supervising the clinical work of chaplain interns and residents.
  • Development of administrative and mentoring skills for coordinating pastoral care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide immediate and long-term assessment of the spiritual situation and needs of individuals in assigned areas.
  • Offer pastoral care and counseling, including sacraments and rituals of the religious community.
  • Identify and refer individuals to appropriate clergy or religious leaders for those of different faith perspectives.
  • Support hospital staff through individual counseling and structured group meetings.
  • Participate in the assessment, education, and resolution of medical ethical issues.
  • Develop the pastoral component in interdisciplinary teams.
  • Create outreach programs to community clergy and religious leaders for adjunct chaplaincy.
  • Supervise chaplain residents and interns in assigned areas.
  • Conduct ongoing pastoral evaluation and research programs.
  • Facilitate seminars on specific pastoral care issues for chaplain residents and interns.
