About The Position

The position involves providing spiritual, social, and emotional support to patients, families, and staff in a healthcare setting, in alignment with the healing mission of Jesus and the values of Mercy. The role focuses on meeting the health needs of the community through compassionate care and exceptional service, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their belief system, receive support during times of illness or stress.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Theology, Ministry, Divinity, or a related field.
  • One unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent experience, with a requirement to complete the unit within one year if using equivalent experience.
  • Experience in visiting the sick in a ministry capacity.
  • In good standing with the community and endorsed or eligible for endorsement by a faith community.
  • Compassion and respect for the dignity of each person.
  • Good communication and listening skills.
  • Ability to minister to the whole person with an emphasis on the spiritual.
  • Ability to work in emotional and stressful situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Some Master's level work in Theology, Ministry, Counseling, Divinity, or a related field.
  • Two units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
  • Current healthcare or military chaplaincy experience.
  • Language skills or experience with specific patient groups served.
  • Sensitivity to and respect for various religions.
  • Knowledge in areas of pastoral theology, medical ethics, spirituality, death and dying, and crisis intervention.

Responsibilities

  • Assist patients, families, and personnel in meeting their spiritual, social, and emotional needs during illness or injury.
  • Minister to all persons regardless of their belief system.
  • Perform duties consistent with Mercy's mission, values, and service standards.
  • Advocate for patients, family members, or co-workers when necessary.
  • Work independently and collaboratively within a strong pastoral team and interdisciplinary clinical team.
  • Utilize computer systems, pagers, and telephone systems effectively.
