Chaplains are professionally trained spiritual care providers who provide spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and staff during their time in the hospital and/or hospice setting. They offer spiritual support, spiritual counsel, and comfort as part of total holistic care. They use their skills to help individuals find meaning, purpose, and connection in their lives, as well as spiritual histories to determine the importance of the patient's religious practices and faith community connection. Chaplains are also spiritual specialists who conduct spiritual assessments to determine if a patient is in spiritual distress, create a spiritual plan of care, and chart this information for the treatment team. Chaplains may also provide prayer and ritual support for patients/families that request it; provide guidance and development to departmental volunteers; and may assist with training.
