Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed, community teaching hospital with a focus on helping people manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases. I. General Summary Under general supervision serves the spiritual, religious and emotional needs of patients, families and employees. II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified. Provides pastoral care for patients, families/friends, and employees of the Medical Center in accordance with departmental procedures and accepted pastoral practices.

  • Provides pastoral care to patients, families and staff.
  • Responds to requests for pastoral care to patients, families/friends and/or staff by pagers, EMR consults, phone, and verbal referrals.
  • Carries appropriate emergency pagers.
  • Responds according to department policies and procedures.
  • Provides proactive pastoral care and high visibility of service by rounding on each unit during his/her shift as time allows.
  • Master’s Degree in Divinity, or a related theological field, from an accredited college, university or seminary is required.
  • Official transcript that all course work has been completed and Masters Degree will be awarded at the next regularly scheduled graduation is acceptable for graduating seminarians.
  • Ordination, rostering, or licensing as a religious leader or recognized lay leader in his/her faith tradition or equivalent, or current approval or candidacy for such by his/her respective faith tradition is required.
  • Current approval for ordination or rostering, candidacy for ordination or rostering or denominational endorsement by his/her respective faith tradition is required.
  • Two units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an accredited ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education) center is required.
  • Knowledge of theology, scriptural studies, counseling skills, comparative religions, canonical law, and church practices.
  • General understanding of human behavior and the health care field is desirable.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary to work with various hospital departments, employees, patients and families.
  • Ability to handle confidential issues with the utmost integrity and discretion is required.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
  • Preference given for three or more units.
