About The Position

The University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development (EHD) invites applications for a faculty wage position to serve as Chair of the UVA K–12 Advisory Council, one of EHD’s signature outreach partnerships with school divisions across the Commonwealth. This position provides strategic leadership for the Council and supports EHD’s mission to strengthen research-practice partnerships, elevate leadership development, and respond to statewide educational needs. The Chair holds a faculty wage appointment and may also engage in in teaching, mentoring, and program support within EHD.

Requirements

  • Significant leadership experience with no less than 5 years in K–12 education preferably as a superintendent or district-level executive.
  • Demonstrated credibility and strong relationships within Virginia’s education community.
  • EdD or PhD in Educational Leadership or related field
  • Commitment to public education and to strengthening research–practice connections.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with university partners, advisory structures, or statewide education networks.
  • Familiarity with UVA EHD programs, SCOPE, or leadership development initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Advisory Council, including development of an annual Work Plan and meeting themes.
  • Lead and support the Council Steering Committee, reviewing membership annually based on superintendent turnover and statewide needs
  • Serve as a primary representative of the Council to educational and policy leaders across Virginia.
  • Collaborate with the Dean’s Office, SCOPE Director, and EHD staff to plan and deliver three annual Council meetings.
  • Identify and prepare faculty and practitioner presenters who connect research to pressing problems of practice.
  • Facilitate Council meetings to ensure meaningful engagement, productive discussion, and effective time management.
  • Coordinate meeting logistics, including communication with presenters and post meeting materials distribution.
  • Serve as a liaison for UVA faculty seeking practitioner input or Council participation for research efforts.
  • Maintain relationships with superintendents statewide and communicate the value of Council involvement.
  • Monitor superintendent transitions and coordinate updates to Council membership lists and communications.
  • Engage with the Administration and Supervision program area; attend program meetings as requested.
  • Teach in the program as appropriate and serve on dissertation or capstone committees.
  • Promote SCOPE as the Council’s signature leadership development initiative.
  • Support cohort recruitment, launch, and graduation events.
  • Serve as SCOPE faculty and contribute to cohort learning experiences.
  • Represent the Council as a key outreach arm of EHD to the professional field.
  • Support identification of superintendent advocates for institutional visibility efforts.
  • Collaborate with School leadership to identify and support opportunities for statewide convenings or policy-focused summits.
