About The Position

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair, Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS). The ideal candidate for the Chair is a collaborative, engaging leader with a passion for clinical and academic excellence. They advance and elevate the quality and visibility of VCS’ clinical services, teaching, and research while managing departmental administration. The Chair mentors and coaches faculty, staff, and trainees to craft clear growth pathways so team members can build long, fulfilling careers. They lead with emotional intelligence and a visible commitment to fairness, integrity, and respect , and foster a positive, collegial workplace culture. Finally, the Chair encourages and builds cross-departmental collaborations and relationships with other internal and external stakeholders to advance the VCS and College missions.

Requirements

  • DVM or equivalent degree.
  • Demonstrated achievement in clinical service, scholarship, and teaching, with qualifications consistent with the faculty academic rank of professor in the tenure track. Candidates currently on a clinical (non‑tenure) track will be considered if their record meets tenure‑track criteria; appointment and rank will follow standard faculty review and institutional tenure and promotion policies.
  • Diplomate of an AVMA recognized specialty board or equivalent.
  • The ideal candidate will possess a robust understanding of the academic veterinary medicine clinical, training, and research environment.
  • Leadership experience with a proven track record in setting long-term vision and aligning resources to that vision, building effective teams, managing personnel at various levels of the organization, and mentoring personnel for individual growth and development.
  • Business acumen including familiarity with clinical operations and/or teaching hospital environments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide Academic Leadership : Lead and guide the department's faculty in their scholarship and academic pursuits, their contributions to pre-clinical and clinical teaching in the Professional DVM Program, and their ongoing efforts in the development and implementation of the College’s curriculum. Champion and grow the department’s scholarship and research enterprise by setting priorities, aligning resources and infrastructure, supporting scholars, and enabling grant and publication success. Support the oversight of the graduate, internship, residency, and clinician-scientist programs. Advance departmental strategic planning to identify, prioritize, and implement initiatives in support of teaching, research, clinical practice, and community outreach. Engage directly in clinical service, teaching, research, and outreach as appropriate.
  • Oversee Departmental Administration : Manage processes such as recruitment, policy development, and committee management, to ensure the department's efficiency and effectiveness. Develop and manage the departmental budget. Develop and maintain a strategic personnel plan that addresses current academic, research, and teaching needs while also considering potential succession planning. Provide guidance and clarification regarding external, university, college, and department policies and procedures to uphold compliance and accountability. Collaborate with Veterinary Health System leadership to ensure we are delivering top-tier care to our patients and clients, and providing an excellent clinical teaching environment for our students and house officers.
  • Mentor, Coach, and Develop Faculty, Staff, and Trainees: Provide continuous coaching, feedback, and mentorship to faculty, staff, and trainees to foster professional growth, goal attainment, and career advancement. Oversee and actively engage in the formal annual performance review of faculty and the processes and procedures for faculty appointments, promotion, tenure, and reappointment.
  • Promote a Culture of Connection : Model and foster an environment of collegiality, professional citizenship, and collaboration to encourage team science, team teaching, and shared governance. Proactively ensure a welcoming and supportive environment where our faculty, staff, and trainees can work, serve, and learn.
  • Provide College-level Leadership : Be an effective and collaborative member of the college leadership team. Contribute to and help advance the College's Be The Model® strategic plan, working with your colleagues and in alignment with the University’s Shared Values and our College Values. Engage with the college’s Advancement Team (fundraising, alumni affairs, marketing/communications, continuing education, and external relations) to promote the activities and initiatives of the department and foster and advance a culture of philanthropy.
  • Facilitate Connections and Strengthen Partnerships : Build cross-departmental collaborations and relationships with other internal and external stakeholders and constituents across the College, the University, and our community. Serve as a liaison and facilitate connections between faculty and external constituency groups within Ohio and nationally. Maintain and enhance relationships with key university partners, including Infectious Diseases Institute, Discovery Themes, and Sustainability Institute, among others.
