The University of Chicago's Biological Sciences Division is seeking an academic leader and eminent cancer researcher to serve as Professor and Chair of the Ben May Department for Cancer Research and as Director of the Ludwig Center. This prestigious role is designed for an individual with a strong background in cancer research, who will be responsible for developing and expanding the department's research strengths and ambitions. The Ben May Department has a legacy of impactful scientific discovery, and the new Chair is expected to build upon this foundation, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration within the department and across the university. The Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Chicago is dedicated to delivering outstanding patient care, conducting world-renowned research, and providing exemplary education at all levels. The Chair will play a crucial role in leading impactful basic science cancer research and promoting Team Science, leveraging the strengths of the Biological Sciences Division, the College of Medicine, and the Comprehensive Cancer Center. This role comes with significant resources, including substantial endowment funds from the Ludwig Center, aimed at supporting the growth of basic science research focused on cancer. The Chair will have the opportunity to build a robust department within a broad ecosystem of interdisciplinary cancer research and training, fostering collaborations that enable translational science and the creation of large, multi-investigator grants. As a senior leader at the UChicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Chair will represent the needs of basic research and discovery science, participating in strategic planning efforts that utilize strengths across disciplines within the university system. The new UChicago Medicine Cancer Pavilion and Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility scheduled to open in spring 2027, will further enhance the resources available to the Chair and the department. The Director of the Ludwig Center will have the opportunity to direct a preeminent research enterprise exploring major aspects of cancer research, including tumor metabolism, cancer metastasis, tumor immunology, and drug resistance mechanisms. The organizational structure and collaborative culture at the University of Chicago provide considerable flexibility in tailoring this position to fit the desired vision and scope, allowing the Chair to work closely with outstanding institutional assets and a multidisciplinary training structure involving multiple well-funded graduate programs.
