About The Position

The Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is responsible for ensuring the quality and safety of welded structures by visually inspecting welds, verifying compliance with codes and standards, and documenting findings, ultimately safeguarding structural integrity and preventing potential hazards.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is required
  • Valid Driver's License and pre-access drug and alcohol testing required
  • Pre-employment background checks will be required
  • Ability and willingness to travel to multiple job sites may be required for some sites/locations, sometimes with little notice

Nice To Haves

  • Post-secondary education in welding technology or engineering will be considered an asset.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience of welding-related experience is strongly preferred
  • SNT Level II certifications in MT/PT/UTT/RT considered an asset
  • Additional API 510/570/653 and/or NACE certifications are considered an asset
  • Valid TWIC Card and/or knowledge of PIN to TWIC Card may be required for some sites/location

Responsibilities

  • Conduct visual inspections of all welds and materials to ensure they meet customer and industry standards, specifications and/or AWS codes.
  • Examine inspection records to determine inspection schedule and remedial actions conform with procedures and regulations.
  • Evaluate the validity and acceptability of inspection, examination, and/or testing results.
  • Witness and monitor work activities, inspections, and testing in accordance with approved quality plans, site surveillance plans, Inspection and Testing Plans (ITP's), procedures and processes.
  • Inspect pipe-joining methods used by other personnel such as fusion and pipe welding.
  • Examine containers, piping, tubing, and fittings for leaks and for adherence to government specifications for pressure level, design, construction and installation.
  • Observe in-process welding and perform quality inspections on work currently performed or work that has been recently completed utilizing established checklists and/or other quality related documents.
  • Measure dimensions, materials, products, installations or work for conformance to specifications.
  • Ensure project permitting requirements are followed including pre- and post-project notifications.
  • Demonstrate comprehensive understanding of welding codes, procedures, specifications, and related technical documents.
  • May utilize various NDT methods, such as ultrasonic, magnetic particle, and radiographic testing, to evaluate welds.
  • Interpret blueprints, project plans, specifications, and other technical documents to verify compliance.
  • Verify welding operations adhere to relevant codes, standards, and specifications, such as those from the American Welding Society (AWS).
  • Meticulously document inspection results, including identifying any defects or imperfections, and prepare reports for engineers, welders, and other stakeholders.
  • Produce relevant field quality reports and provide quality metrics.
  • Document and report inspection findings and job scope activities to meet standards, industry practices, and safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Effectively communicate findings and recommendations to ensure that necessary corrective actions are taken.
  • Discuss and explain procedures and regulations or need for corrective action with appropriate personnel.
  • Recommend updates/revisions to policies and procedures based on field observations where procedures may not be followed because they are unclear, incorrect, or nonexistent.
  • Recommend additional training, if deemed necessary, for field personnel based on findings of inspections.
  • Provide guidance and training to welding team members on proper welding techniques and quality control procedures.
  • Guide and assist technicians in the fabrication and installation of simple mechanical and related equipment and routine systems to ensure conformance of product and systems with engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Develop and review welding procedures to ensure they meet quality and safety requirements.
  • Must be a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and possess certification from a recognized organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS).
  • Responsible for verifying that welders are qualified to perform specific welding tasks.
  • Write qualifications for each welder on-stie and the procedure qualifications for all welders.
  • Certify all welders to the required AWS D1.1 standard or D15.1 if applicable.
  • Play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of welding operations and the integrity of welded structures.
  • Must have an eye for detail and the ability to identify defects in welds.
  • Facilitate the timely and effective resolution of quality issues by serving as a liaison between stakeholders.
