About The Position

The Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist at NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals is responsible for providing goal-directed interventions to enhance the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning of disabled individuals. This role focuses on promoting independent living skills and facilitating new skill development through therapeutic recreational activities. The position is part-time and located at the Medical Behavioral Hospital of Clear Lake, Texas, where the specialist will work within a multi-disciplinary team to deliver exceptional patient-centered care.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a baccalaureate degree program with a specialization in therapeutic recreation, including completion of an internship.
  • CTRS (Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist) certification required.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification obtained during orientation.
  • Demonstrated competence to practice as a therapeutic recreation specialist or recreation therapist.
  • Ability to lead and motivate individuals.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • Creative and resourceful in therapy techniques.
  • Good computer skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Observe, analyze, and record patients' participation, reactions, and progress during treatment sessions, modifying treatment programs as needed.
  • Develop treatment plans to meet the needs of patients based on initial assessments, interests, and therapy objectives.
  • Encourage patients with special needs to acquire new skills and engage in health-promoting leisure activities.
  • Counsel and motivate patients to develop leisure activities.
  • Confer with treatment team members to plan and evaluate therapy programs.
  • Conduct therapy sessions to improve patients' mental and physical well-being.
  • Instruct patients in activities and techniques designed to meet their specific needs.
  • Obtain information from medical records and staff to assess patients' capabilities and interests.
  • Display concern and initiative, remaining resourceful and calm in emergencies.
  • Cooperate and maintain good rapport with nursing and medical staff, other departments, and visitors.
  • Comply with federal and hospital regulations regarding patient privacy and ethical behavior.
  • Assist with other tasks as directed by the supervisor.
  • Supervise the activity program and staff, ensuring compliance with hospital policies.
