The purpose of the job is to establish and maintain a sterile field and safe environment throughout the surgical procedure, to assess instrumentation and equipment needs, and to anticipate and provide instrumentation and equipment needs for the surgeon's use in a timely manner to enhance patient outcomes. Job Description This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this department. Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • Basic Life Support Health Care Provider (CPR, BLS) - American Heart Association
  • Certified as a Surgical Technologist (CST) from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), or from the National Certification for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts.
  • Performs and/or provides scrub assistance during procedures which reflect awareness of anatomy, necessary principles, skills, supplies, and adequate knowledge base.
  • Assists the circulating nurse in implementing the perioperative plan of care to include: patient positioning, confirmation/preparation of operative site, updating physician preference card, care of operative specimens and room turnover.
  • Demonstrates the application of the principles of asepsis.
  • Adheres to unit specific standards, policies and procedures for aseptic techniques.
  • Selects proper sterilization method of instruments/equipment: sterilizes prior to procedures, as necessary and verifies instruments are sterile.
  • Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or breaks in aseptic technique occur and reports information to the circulating nurse.
  • Demonstrates basic surgical case preparation skills.
  • Assists with pulling cases and checks case cart for completeness, obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins.
  • Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments, and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card.
  • Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform the role of first scrub on all basic surgical cases.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures and other items appropriate to the procedure.
  • Establishes and maintains and organized sterile field.
  • Assists the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
  • Supply Room Access. Enters supply room(s) on nursing units as needed to perform necessary job functions.
  • Refrains from manipulating or removing any intravenous fluids that are stored in the area.
