About The Position

The Surgical Technologist III WIP (operating room scrub technician) possesses advanced skills in assigned specialty area and maintains knowledge and skills to function competently on any team based on departmental needs. This job sets up sterile field, gathers supplies for surgical cases based on knowledge of instruments and equipment to be used. The Surgical Technologist III WIP role passes instruments to surgeons during surgery. This role also formulates plans for procedures with nurses and surgeons. The Surgical Technologist III WIP plans and facilitates quality assurance and/or performance improvement activities. This position serves as a resource and preceptor to Surgical Technologists I and II in their assigned specialty area. This position demonstrates advanced skills in practice specialty. This position also functions under the direct supervision of an RN circulator.

Requirements

  • Registered by the State Board of Medicine and Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TS-C) or Certified Operating Room or Surgical Technician (CORST) certification.
  • Registration by the Virginia State Board of Medicine
  • Current AHA, BLS, HCP Certification
  • Current CST; TS-C or CORST required
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience as a Surgical Technologist or related scrub technician position
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Graduate of a Surgical Technology Program or a military training program or Licensed Practical Nursing Program
  • Functions under the direction of RN or independent practitioner in providing direct patient care, emotional support and problem solving, all in accordance with hospital, nursing and unit policies and procedures.
  • Requires prior approval or guidance from supervisor for time/schedule changes, legal issues, direct care which deviates from the standard and identification of educational resources to meet developmental needs.
  • Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies.
  • Surgical Technologists work all three shifts, weekends and holidays.
  • Takes independent call for routine or high acuity cases after the orientation period.
  • Physical: Lifting 50-100 lbs.
  • Other: Exposure to potentially hazardous and infectious substances
  • Activities: Prolonged standing, Prolonged sitting, Frequent bending, Walking (distance), Climbing (steps, ladder, other), Reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive)

  • Emotional: Fast pace environment, Steady pace, Able to handle multiple priorities, Frequent and intense customer interactions, Noisy environment, Able to adapt to frequent, change

Nice To Haves

  • 3-5 years' experience as a surgical technologist or related scrub technician position, with 2 years in a specific practice area.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology Program
