About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technologist participates in the delivery of individualized peri-operative registered nursing care under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician or a registered professional nurse. Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to assure quality patient care. The Certified Surgical Technologist Establishes and maintains a sterile field and assures team maintains a sterile environment. Correctly and safely passes instruments to clinician. Participants in surgical counts (sponge, needle and instruments), per policy. Communicates with surgeons, gastroenterologists, anesthesiologists, other necessary staff and patients to facilitate continuity of care. Follows policies, procedures, all regulatory standards and patient safety goals. Participates in the nursing process for patients of all ages served. Participates in unit educational activities.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Successfully completed an accredited surgical technologist training program and holds a current credential as a certified surgical technologist from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor. Or, has successfully completed a training program for surgical technology during the person's service as a member of any branch of the armed forces of the United States.
  • Certification in Surgical Technology required.
  • LPN licensure required for grandfathered employees.
  • Obtain and/or maintain registration with the VA Dept of Health Professions.
  • Knowledge of instrumentations.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development through the life span, interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age and specific needs, and provide the care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures.
