About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technologist at Fort Loudoun Medical Center plays a crucial role in facilitating patient care by assisting physicians and nursing staff before, during, and after surgical procedures. This includes creating and maintaining a sterile field and providing the necessary instruments and supplies in a sterile manner according to the established plan of patient care. The position requires competence in performing the majority of assigned cases in a given service/shift, with the ability to handle difficult or complicated cases either with or without assistance. The role is full-time, requiring 80 hours per pay period on day shift, with occasional weekday and weekend call responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Must hold current and active national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification established by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
  • BLS certification preferred.
  • Minimum education sufficient to meet the standards for achievement of CST certification.
  • No prior experience required with certification.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates patient care by assisting the surgeon before, during, and after surgical procedures.
  • Creates and maintains a sterile field and provides instruments and supplies required by the surgeons.
  • Plans, sets up, performs, and cleans up the assigned surgical procedure as a circulator and/or scrub tech.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of equipment and instrumentation pertaining to surgical cases.
  • Safely operates special equipment used in surgical cases (e.g., lasers, microscopes, endoscopes).
  • Maintains instrument and equipment integrity and performs room turnover and terminal cleaning.
  • Utilizes supplies appropriately and in a cost-effective manner.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of asepsis principles in maintaining the sterile field.
  • Assists nurse in performing sharp, sponge, and instrument counts according to policy.
  • Demonstrates proper positioning techniques for surgical cases.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Completes required education assignments annually.
  • Participates in quality improvement initiatives as requested.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
