About The Position

Optim Medical Center - Screven is seeking a PRN Certified Surgical Technician for our Sylvania location. GENERAL DUTIES: Assists physicians and nurses in various medical, technical, and Clerical procedures. REPORTING: Reports to the Surgical Nurse Manager. SPUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Frequent standing and walking or other means pf mobility for extended periods of time. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Requires exposure to germicidal agents and anesthesia gases. Requires working under stress in emergency situations or during irregular hours. WORKING CONDITIONS: May be exposed to communicable diseases, toxic substances, and other conditions common to a clinical environment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices techniques of medical and surgical care to assist in providing patient care and treatment.
  • Knowledge of surgical positioning of patients.
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, treatment, and surgical procedure.
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Skill in taking vital signs.
  • Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to communicate clearly
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Completion of course for Surgical Technicians from a accredited school.
  • One to three years of experience in a hospital operating room setting as Certified Surgical Technician or equivalent work experience.
  • Certificate from the American Association of Surgical Technologists.
  • CPR Certification.

  • Certification as a surgical technologist preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performs scrubbing and second assisting functions (minimal suctioning, tissue retractions, cutting of sutures and application of dressing) during surgical intervention, under the direct supervision of the physician. Note: Performs first assisting as appropriate to training and experience.
  • Assembles instruments, equipment, and supplies required for surgical procedures according to Physician’s preference Cards.
  • Cleans, decontaminates, wraps, and sterilizes equipment and instruments.
  • Cleans surgical suites after each case and performs terminal cleaning of the surgical suites to ensure a safe patient environment.
  • Maintains supplies and restocks Surgery Center.
  • Maintains proficiency in knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and A.O.R.N. standards of asepsis.
  • Participates in the sponge, needle, and instruments count with the circulating nurse as needed.
  • Turns over cases as needed (mopping of floors, etc) to help turner over time between cases.
  • Performs routine cleaning of Autoclave, Steris and Sterrad and maintains sterility log. Notifies Manager if repairs are needed.
  • Responsible for identifying and preserving specimens received during surgery.
  • Orders supplies and maintains records, reports, log, etc.
  • Maintains the rights, dignity, and confidentiality of the patient.
  • Participates in the OSC emergency, fire, and disaster drills.
  • Participates in professional development activities and maintains professional affiliations.
  • Follows all OSC Policies and Procedures.
  • Attends required in-services and educational programs.
  • Performs other related duties as requested or assigned.
  • Assists physician in performance of procedures or test in clinical setting.
  • Assists physician in wound care, application of splints and dressings, and dressing changes.
  • Takes vital signs. Performs a variety of tests.
  • Circulates in the O.R. under the supervision and direction of an R.N.
