About The Position

The Certified Surgical Technician First Assistant plays a critical role in supporting surgical teams by providing expert assistance during operative procedures. This position ensures the highest standards of patient care and safety by preparing the operating room, managing surgical instruments, and assisting surgeons directly throughout the surgery. The role demands meticulous attention to detail, strong knowledge of surgical techniques, and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team to facilitate efficient and effective procedures. Additionally, the technician is responsible for maintaining sterile environments and adhering to all regulatory and institutional protocols. Ultimately, this position contributes significantly to positive surgical outcomes and overall patient well-being.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited Surgical Assisting Program
  • Certification as a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through the NBSTSA
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, and sterile techniques.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with advanced surgical technologies and minimally invasive procedures.
  • Additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
  • Strong background in multiple surgical specialties.
  • Experience working in a hospital setting with a multidisciplinary surgical team.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the surgeon by providing exposure, controlling bleeding, handling tissues and suturing incisions.
  • Anticipates the surgeon's needs based on procedural knowledge and patient factors
  • Ensure all surgical equipment is functioning properly and troubleshoot any issues that arise during procedures.
  • Collaborate closely with the surgical team, including nurses and anesthesiologists, to coordinate patient care.
  • Adhere strictly to infection control protocols and hospital policies to ensure patient and staff safety.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with surgical techniques and technologies.
