About The Position

The Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) is an allied health professional who plays a crucial role in providing surgical care to patients in the operating room. The CSFA practices within an expanded role as a first assistant during surgical interventions, assuming responsibility for advanced surgical assisting skills. Working under the supervision of a registered nurse, the CSFA facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive and minimally invasive surgical procedures. This position requires collaboration with and direction from the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of the perioperative experience. The CSFA ensures that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. A CSFA possesses expertise in sterile and aseptic techniques and combines knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to assist the physician in performing invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • Minimum Years of Experience: 2 Years of Diversified Operating Room Experience.
  • Graduate from a NBTSA accredited surgical assisting program.
  • Current Certified Surgical First Assistant certification (CSFA).
  • Current CPR certification, BCLS.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in applying principles of asepsis and infection control.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and operative techniques.

  • Licensed RNs approved by Presiding Leadership and Assigned Physician(s) with 2 Years of Clinical Experience.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates competence to provide developmentally appropriate care/treatment for various populations including infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
  • Responsible for all specific duties and responsibilities of a certified Surgical Technologist as per Lexington Medical Center job description.
  • Perform first assistant responsibilities in accordance with scope of practice as set forth by the Association of Surgical Assistants and Lexington Medical Center job description.
  • Assist in positioning, skin preparation, and draping of the patient.
  • Provide visualization of the operative site through appropriate placement and securing of retractors, packing with sponges, digital manipulation of tissue, suctioning, irrigating, or sponging, and manipulation of suture materials.
  • Utilize appropriate techniques to assist with hemostasis including clamping, cauterizing vessels, tying, ligating clamped vessels, applying hemostatic clips, and applying local hemostatic agents.
  • Assist with closure of body planes using running or interrupted sutures and closing skin as indicated by the surgeon.
  • Select and apply appropriate wound dressings and assist in securing drainage systems to tissue.
  • Use surgical instruments skillfully and assist in transporting the patient postoperatively.
  • Clear the operating room for the next procedure, including appropriate disposal of contaminated linen and waste.
  • Ensure hazardous waste is managed properly and perform all other duties as assigned.
