Positions Location: St. Johns, MI Job Description General Purpose of Job: The Surgical Technologist First Assistant (STFA) provides direct, hands-on support to surgeons during surgical procedures, managing the sterile field and assisting with complex surgical tasks to improve patient outcomes. This role requires proficiency in scrubbing, passing instruments, and active surgical assisting (retracting, suctioning, suturing). Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Team Members may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position. Surgical Scrub Duties: Set up sterile fields, instruments, and equipment; scrub in, pass instruments, and maintain a sterile field throughout the procedure. Surgical Assisting Duties: Actively assist the surgeon with tissue handling, retraction, providing exposure, controlling bleeding (hemostasis), and wound closure. Patient Care: Assist with patient transport, positioning, and skin prep (shaving, cleaning) to ensure safety and prevent injury. Safety & Compliance: Perform accurate instrument, needle, and sponge counts with the circulating nurse. Instrument Maintenance: Responsible for the care, maintenance, and sterilization of equipment and surgical instruments. Collaborative Care: Work with the surgical team (surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists) to ensure efficient, safe operative care. Maintain up-to-date surgical skills through CME and personal training. Assist in making sure that all required equipment and supplies are available for boarded procedures.

Requirements

  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association within 45 days of hire and maintain.
  • Minimum 2 years experience as a surgical technologist, with demonstrated proficiency in first assisting.
  • Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology and Surgical First Assist program.
  • Basic computer knowledge and proficiency.
  • Strong technical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and sterile techniques.
  • Clinical knowledge and analytic ability necessary to perform duties as a STFA
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and communication skills
