Southern Avenue Charter School is seeking committed and certified Substitute Classroom Teachers to support our students’ learning in the absence of regular classroom teachers. The ideal candidate is passionate about education, adaptable to various classroom settings, and able to deliver high-quality instruction that aligns with our school's academic standards and values. This position plays a critical role in maintaining continuity of learning and supporting a positive, respectful classroom environment.

  • Implement lesson plans and instructional materials left by the classroom teacher, or create engaging lessons when plans are not available.
  • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Establish and maintain effective classroom management and discipline procedures.
  • Provide feedback to the regular teacher regarding student performance and behavior.
  • Follow school policies, procedures, and routines with consistency and professionalism.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students’ varying needs and interests.
  • Uphold the mission and values of Southern Avenue Charter School in all interactions with students, staff, and families.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with students, staff, and administrators.
  • Supervise students in the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, playground, or on field trips as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and school information.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid teaching certification or substitute teaching license (State of Tennessee preferred).
  • Prior classroom teaching or substitute teaching experience preferred.
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Flexibility and ability to adjust to changing environments
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Ability to foster a positive, inclusive learning atmosphere
