About The Position

Employee is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, and processing of reusable instruments and trays to facilitate age specific patient care as according to IAHCSMM Standards or CBSPD Standards. Responsible for preceptoring new employees for the MOR as well as Surgical Support Services in teaching them the aspects of Surgical Support Services. Responsible for serving as a liaison between the operating room and sterile processing department. Employee will monitor activities to ensure that industry standards are upheld in the OR and SPD according to IAHCSMM. Under the direct supervision of the Sterile Processing Manager. Responsible for assigned shifts as scheduled. Employee is subject to overtime and call back as required by hospital.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Current certification in sterile processing.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans, decontaminates, inspects, sterilizes, and assembles instrument sets to facilitate age specific patient care.
  • Has in depth knowledge of all aspects of Surgical Support Services including case building, Jax Pax, and sterile instrument and supply placement.
  • Has in depth knowledge of all aspects of sterilization parameters, including steam sterilizers, ultra-sonic cleaners, washer/disinfectors, and Sterrad.
  • Monitors steam sterilizer loads, has ability to identify and take steps to solve problems concerning codes and warnings on computer printouts.
  • Maintains instrument availability for scheduled and additional cases.
  • Process instruments in the most efficient manner possible, which includes having all trays complete and ready for their appropriate procedures on time.
  • Complete knowledge of the Bowie Dick (DART) test for sterilizer testing.
  • Complete knowledge of the biological indicators for testing of the sterilizers.
  • Initiates proper protocol in the event of a failed DART test.
  • identifies, initiates, and coordinates recall procedures in the event of a positive culture.
  • Coordinates with surgery personnel on instrument sets needed for surgery cases.
  • Responds to and communicates well with co-workers and other departments.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
