The Certified School Nurse (PEL-CSN) position is designed to develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive school-based health program, delivering services mandated by law and Board of Education policy to enhance students' health, wellness, and educational performance. The role requires adherence to professional standards of school nursing practice, applicable State law and regulations, and Board of Education policies. The position is full-time and classified as exempt, with an anticipated work year and hours aligned with full-time teachers, plus two additional weeks before and after the school year.

  • Participates in the development, implementation, and overseeing a comprehensive school-based health program.
  • Helps to provide a safe school environment for students.
  • Collects and analyzes epidemiological and other District health information.
  • Assists in the development of an accident/injury prevention program.
  • Determines the impact of students' contagious illnesses and acts to prevent the spread of communicable disease.
  • Assists in the assessment of health and safety needs in compliance with OSHA guidelines.
  • Follows a communicable disease prevention and control program.
  • Manages District health records in accordance with the Illinois School Student Records Act.
  • Participates in Child Find programs and manages health screening programs.
  • Recommends modifications to District programs for students with health concerns.
  • Develops and maintains healthcare plans for students requiring special nursing interventions.
  • Collaborates with staff in assessing and implementing student behavior plans.
  • Identifies resources about health-related services in the community.
  • Monitors student attendance and coordinates interventions.
  • Provides staff in-service programs on health-related topics.
  • Provides health education in the classroom.
  • Administers direct professional nursing services, first aid, and emergency care to students.
  • Screens for student health problems impacting education.
  • Develops and administers a medication protocol.
  • Maintains accurate school health records.
  • Participates as a crisis team member for sudden illness or injury.
  • Maintains a user-friendly health services facility.
  • Purchases and maintains health and OSHA supplies.
  • Acts as Lead Nurse to non-certified staff and health service volunteers.
  • Acts as a liaison between home and school regarding students' health needs.
  • Maintains communication with various stakeholders to meet health needs.
  • Participates in health-related community activities.
  • Conducts medical review components of student case study evaluations.
  • Completes mandated hearing and vision screenings.
  • Attends eligibility and IEP meetings as necessary.
  • Collaborates with Student Services Department for home hospital services.
  • Writes the health component of the Individual Education Plan (IEP).
  • Participates in professional school nursing and education organizations.
  • Represents health/wellness in the school community.
  • Baccalaureate Degree or higher.
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL).
  • Valid Illinois Hearing and Vision Screening Certification.
  • Valid Healthcare Provider CPR/AED certification.
  • PEL-CSN (Professional Educator License-Certified School Nurse).
  • Minimum of two years of prior professional nursing experience, preferably in pediatric, adolescent, community or mental health nursing.
  • National School Nurse Certification (NCSN).
  • Bilingual - Spanish.
  • Computer literacy and competency.
  • Ability to interpret and make decisions based on data.
  • Excellent writing and public speaking skills.
