About The Position

The position is for a Medical Assistant in the Oncology department at Advocate Health, specifically in the Rock Hill location. The role is full-time, requiring 40 hours per week, and involves various responsibilities related to patient care. The Medical Assistant will adhere to the scope of practice, follow policies and procedures, and maintain training and competency based on their area of specialty. Key tasks include rooming patients, performing vital signs, medication reconciliation, assisting providers with procedures, and conducting lab-related duties such as venipuncture and specimen collection. The Medical Assistant will also administer medications and vaccines, complete clinical laboratory tests, and ensure a clean and well-stocked work environment. The position requires effective communication and teamwork, as well as the ability to assess and provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program or equivalent military training.
  • Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required.
  • Successful completion of Atrium Health’s competency assessment.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the AHA needs to be obtained within 45 days unless exempted.
  • Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition, and Stabilization (PEARS) may be required within 1 year in select areas.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or similar organizations.
  • 2 years of verifiable full-time experience as a Medical Assistant within the last 5 years.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to Medical Assistant scope of practice and follows all policies and procedures.
  • Performs rooming/visit tasks such as vital signs, medication reconciliation, medical history, health maintenance, allergy review, and screenings.
  • Assists provider with or performs procedures as ordered.
  • Performs lab related duties such as venipuncture, specimen collection/labeling/packing, preparation of lab orders/requisitions, and results tracking.
  • Completes Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) approved waived laboratory tests.
  • Administers medications and vaccines safely following the rights of medication administration.
  • Performs other duties as assigned such as medication refills, insurance authorizations, safety/regulatory log completion, patient messaging, medication/supply ordering, appointment scheduling, and referrals.
  • Cross trained to perform duties relevant to specialty or clinic practice.
  • Demonstrates effective and timely communication, teamwork, and appropriate escalation.
  • Maintains a clean work environment ensuring instruments and equipment are cleaned appropriately.
  • Ensures equipment and supplies are in working order and areas are appropriately stocked.
