About The Position

General Maintenance Worker/Plumber performs highly skilled maintenance, installation, repair and troubleshooting work with plumbing systems. Plumbing work may be performed in a number of areas including proper operation, minor and major repairs of buildings, utilities and other improvements. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • Must possess a Journeyman Plumber License OR if not a licensed journeyman, must have four (4) years of experience in the plumbing field.
  • Must possess a Med Gas ASSE 6040 Certificate or obtain within one (1) year of employment
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health Screening and background investigation.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer need assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of all construction and maintenance work including electrical, plant operation, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting, and power equipment and tool maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and the Joint Commission standards, the National Electrical Code, OSHA, and NFPA Codes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, methods, tools, and equipment used in building maintenance programs.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety standards and provisions of the hospital regulations applicable to maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of energy and natural resource conservation techniques, including energy conservation projects and cost-effective operating techniques.
  • Knowledge of how equipment functions, how components of complex systems are supposed to work together, and how to troubleshoot and diagnose types of malfunctions frequently encountered in boiler, water heating, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints and diagrammed plans and prepare working sketches.
  • Ability to estimate materials and supplies needed to complete projects.
  • Ability to establish work priorities which meet organizational needs.
  • Ability to maintain records/logs in daily routine, inspections, wells, boilers, buildings, domestic water systems, parts, materials, supplies and ordering needed materials.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining heating systems, domestic water, wastewater system to maximum efficiencies/ Ability to make emergency repairs to chlorinating
  • Ability to be "On-Call" Graveyards, Saturday(s) and Sunday(s), also, Holidays on rotation as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to speak the Navajo Language and/or familiarity with the Navajo Way preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Install, modify and repair new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such hydraulic systems, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum and circulating pumps radiators.
  • Plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction expansion and operation of various piping systems and equipment form building plans, blueprints, and sketches.
  • Lay out, install, modify and repair various new and existing piping systems and equipment by installing various kinds of piping, risers and flexible branches at the proper level and incline; determine the placement and elevation and install vacuum and condensate pumps, and radiators, and replace heat exchangers, flash and expansion tanks, and automatic manual control valves.
  • Figure pipe, joint and valve sizes needed to support pressure systems, align pipes, valve fitting, and joints for accurate match and installs proper braces and supports to control movement and vibration and allow for expansion and contraction.
  • Use tools and equipment such as sliding squares, measuring tapes, dividers, chalk lines, plumb bobs, templates, star drills, grinders, flanges, hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, and pipe wrenches.
  • Install, maintain, and repair water and sewer lines, fixtures, and valves.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repair on gas boilers for Install, maintain, and repair gas and heating water lines, natural gas, propane and electrical water heaters for hospital buildings and staff residences.
  • Perform preventive maintenance repairs on cooling systems and air conditioners.
  • Operate acetylene and arc welding equipment.
  • Repair floors, floor coverings, ceilings, walls, partitions, by routine patching and/or removing damaged or unserviceable parts and replacing with an identical/similar/substitute part.
  • Touch up or repaint, including interior/exterior wall, ceilings, floors, etc. Use brushes and rollers to apply standard paints.
  • Replace electrical fuse, make repairs to frayed or broken wiring. Check malfunctions of various electrical equipment such as automatic switching units, thermostats, small equipment transformers, motors, pilot light controls, etc. Corrects problem by adjustment or replacement of the unit or defective parts.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on the plumbing systems, such as, repair or replacement of defective pipes of the water supply system; pumps and pipes of the hot water system, etc., which normally involv• es utilization of original routes, sizes, etc. Replace and repair various other fixtures, such as domestic hot water heaters, faucets, P-traps, etc. Clean clogged drains and sewer lines.
  • Operate and maintain heating systems which provide heat and domestic hot water to the hospital and clinics, administrative buildings, housing, and other related facilities. System operated and maintained are natural/liquefied petroleum gas and low-pressure units consisting of hot water heaters and forced air heaters none of which requires continuous attention, nor are they operated on a rotating shift basis. Is also responsible for the operation and maintenance of individual hot water heating systems, circulating pumps, fuel regulator and various other related auxiliary equipment performing preventive and regularly scheduled maintenance and repairs.
  • Periodically make observation of meters/charts to determine such things as heat and water requirements/utilization; Pressure, water flow, etc., and determine proper adjustments necessary for maximum efficiency and utilization. Crawl under buildings, structures and through steam tunnels to service and repair lines, traps and equipment. On an emergency basis perform major repair in needed areas and/or assist major repair crews. Use the common hand and power tools necessary to accomplish required work.
  • Ensure proper operation of water well pump through periodic checks of water storage tanks for adequate water level. Perform minor service and repair and manual operation of the pumps, observe the equipment, and report operational failures or problems to supervisor. May make periodic minor adjustments. Maintain operational condition of the sewer system; perform a periodic check of the gravity sewer system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
