About The Position

The Certified Phlebotomy Technician I plays a crucial role in the healthcare team by performing blood specimen collection and preparation for analysis. This position requires adherence to safety and infection control guidelines while ensuring high-quality specimen draws and effective communication with patients of all ages. The technician is expected to prioritize tasks efficiently to maximize productivity and participate in performance improvement initiatives.

Requirements

• High School Diploma/GED or higher education in General Studies.
• CA CPT Certification at the time of application.

Responsibilities

• Identify, collect, and label blood specimens according to procedures.
• Utilize various venipuncture devices for blood collection.
• Adhere to infection control guidelines, including handwashing and equipment cleaning.
• Perform blood specimen collection for adult, pediatric, and infant patients.
• Ensure communication is appropriate to the age and status of the patient.
• Prioritize and coordinate work to achieve maximum productivity and efficiency.
• Draw TC, Pre-OP, and STAT specimens within the specified time frames.
• Perform up to 6 venipunctures per hour while meeting quality standards.
• Accurately document clerical and computer-related information.
• Contact the Lab for clarification on specimen requirements when necessary.
• Use appropriate hand-off communication techniques (SBAR) when needed.
• Review departmental notification tools and emails daily to stay informed.
• Maintain a safe work area by observing safety procedures and reporting unsafe conditions.
• Participate in hospital performance improvement activities when appropriate.
