About The Position

The Certified Phlebotomist at the University of Mississippi Medical Center is responsible for performing venipuncture techniques and collecting blood specimens from patients to support laboratory procedures for disease diagnosis and treatment. This role also includes providing guidance and training to subordinate phlebotomists, ensuring compliance with safety and infection control standards, and maintaining accurate documentation of procedures and patient records.

Requirements

• Meet the educational and experience requirements for certification as a phlebotomist by a nationally recognized board/agency.
• Current phlebotomist certification from a recognized board/agency such as ASCP, CVAS, ASPT, NHA, NCCT, ACAH, Medical2, NPA, or others.

• Knowledge of blood processing and handling procedures.
• Knowledge of relevant clinical and patient care regulations, policies, procedures, and standards.
• Interpersonal skills to allay patient fears and interact with staff.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures using standard equipment such as vacutainer tubes, syringes, and butterfly needles.
• Confer with patients to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, and elicit cooperation.
• Prepare, process, label, and store patient specimens and samples according to established procedures.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and stock supplies on carts and hand trays.
• Perform quality control procedures to maintain compliance with applicable regulations and train subordinate staff.
• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
