This role will act in a Float Pool capacity to work in different Galen Medical office labs as needed to cover short and long term leaves, and working in the Corporate Lab in Accessioning role when not in an office.This will be a Full-Time position with Float Pool guidelines. Summary/Objective: Perform venipuncture, skin punctures & all other ancillary testing competently & expediently. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements & assists in Clinical Laboratory as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must be a certified phlebotomist from a nationally accredited institution.
  • One year of relative Phlebotomy experience in the clinical setting is required if completion of a Phlebotomy program qualification is not met.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to multi-task and work as a team player.
  • Excellent computer skills.
  • Ability to follow clinical pathways and protocols.
  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to handle higher-stress phone calls.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
  • Comfortable handling biological specimens.
  • Ability to accurately identify specimens.
  • Strong data entry and organizational skills.
  • High level of attention to detail.

Nice To Haves

  • 1-3 years’ clinical Phlebotomy experience is preferred.
  • Electronic Medical Record experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws competently & expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
  • Record phlebotomy requisitions.
  • Identify the patient by comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s verbal information before venipuncture is performed.
  • Label & records all test tubes and complete log procedures as outlined in the lab procedure manual.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of color top tubes to use, as well as the proper volume of blood needed, and test requirements.
  • Follow universal precautions always.
  • Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule and recording results in the quality-control log.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique and following department procedures.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the ordering provider or nurse; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
  • Dispose of sharps & any containments properly using.
  • Prioritizes STAT, scheduled, and walk in appointments accordingly.
  • Enhances phlebotomy department by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests.
  • Centrifuge blood samples as required by test(s).
  • Practice infection control standards at all times when working with patients & equipment.
  • Maintain regulatory requirements, including all state, federal, and local regulations.
  • Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
  • Complete assignments efficiently & in a timely manner.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving patients, physicians, or others in a professional manner.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise creativity, be attentive to detail, and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Clean, stock, and/or order supplies for all areas in the laboratory, as requested by your supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned by Regional Manager, Site Manager or Provider.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patients, medical, financial, and legal information.
  • Manually opens specimen bags and logs in the number and type of specimens received.
  • Verifies that specimens received are valid for the tests required.
  • Verify the name on the specimen with the request form.
  • Labels requisitions and specimens with accession numbers.
  • Place labeled clinical specimens in proper holders.
  • Perform waived testing and result in computer systems.
  • Maintains clean and neat work area and instruments.
  • Must understand PCIS PM and EMR and LabDaq and how they work together.
  • Sorts specialty test samples in proper order.
  • Assist other personnel in the performance of their duties as assigned and as workload permits.
  • Recognize and demonstrate cost-effective measures in the utilization of supplies and equipment.
  • Send test results to Physicians via the appropriate method.
  • Stores supplies and assists in maintaining inventory.
  • Make recommendations for any improvements in the operation of the lab system.
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Function as relief for other personnel in the office as appropriate and to facilitate coworkers’ absence in the office.
  • Perform waived testing and result in computer systems.
  • Maintain the strictest confidentiality of all company records, including verbal and written records.
  • Look up patient test results in the laboratory information system.
  • Print, reprint, or fax results as necessary.
  • File copies of test results, authorization forms and test orders.
  • Process paperwork with attention to detail, completing tasks with accuracy and precision.
  • Other duties as assigned by Lab Director. Manually opens specimen bags and logs in the number and type of specimens received
