About The Position

The Pharmacy Technician prepares all medications, (unit dose and IV compounded products) for pharmacist check and ensures delivery to nursing unit for patient administration, refills pyxis units, prepares all floor stock requests, maintains the department’s inventory in a clean and orderly condition, requisitions supplies, processes departmental paperwork, and triages phone calls. ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY A. Reports to: Acute Care Operations Supervisor B. Supervises: N/A C. Key Working Relationships: Pharmacists, lead pharmacy – assistant, inventory technician, pharmacy technician, and nursing personnel. D. Primary Customer Groups: All patient care areas served by MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and the Network. E. Age/Population of Patients Served: Neonatal Adolescent Geriatric Pediatric Adult X All Ages ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS A. Seeks opportunities to impact our Key Results and Cultural Beliefs to produce positive outcomes. B. Maintains a positive working relationship with team members, medical personnel, and personnel from other departments. C. Prepares intravenous solutions following the rules and regulations outlined by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy (IBP), USP 797, USP 800 as relevant, along with proper aseptic technique throughout the compounding preparation process. D. Follows regulations as outlined in USP 795. E. Accurately prepares unit dose medications for final verification by the pharmacist. F. Accurately fills floor stock medication requests. G. Prepares outpatient prescriptions for final verification by the pharmacist. H. Packages/Repackages medications utilizing blister packs and proper labeling requirements. I. Performs restocking functions for the crash carts and Thomas packs. J. Utilizes Simplifi797 for required documentation for IV room suite. K. Follows USP 800 regulations regarding receiving, handling, and transporting hazardous medications. L. Responsible for removing soon to expire or expired medications when identified within the pharmacy stock while performing daily functions M. Keeps accurate, up-to-date, and legible records and documentation forms for quality assurance purpose. N. Performs all IV room compounding testing requirements and maintains passing results. O. Performs all daily, weekly and monthly cleaning requirements of the compounding room as required by the IBP, USP 797. USP 795, and USP 800 as well as other federal and state regulatory agencies P. Completes all expected duties and responsibilities prior to leaving assigned shift and work area. Q. Seeks to identify process problems and utilizes problem-solving to produce a positive outcome. R. Performs duties in a cost-effective manner, striving to avoid wasting resources. This includes using time at work in a productive manner, providing/implementing suggestions, and documenting activities that conserve resources (financial and human). S. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations. T. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments. U. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development, and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs V. Maintains current registration status with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy, including notification to the board of any changes in technician name, address or pharmacy employment status. W. Successfully completes and maintains any NCAA-accredited pharmacy technician certification program. X. Communicates with and performs duties following the philosophy of MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center and the Sisters of Mercy reflecting the organization’s Mission, Values, and Culture Beliefs. Y. Supports and abides by all medical center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures. Proactively identifies safety concerns surrounding the work environment. Z. Performs other responsibilities as requested by supervisor, manager or department head. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS A. Files medication orders; maintains records and reports; and performs other clerical duties as assigned. B. Performs functions necessary for pneumatic tube operations. This includes distribution of medications to the proper nursing units via the pneumatic tube and, when required, utilizing the secured transaction functions.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required
  • Registration with the State of Iowa as a pharmacy technician (or technician trainee if awaiting certification) prior to starting position within the pharmacy.
  • National certification acquired through successful completion of any NCCAaccredited pharmacy technician certification program. At least one sitting for examination must be within 9 months of hire, after achieving the required 500 hours to sit for the test. Achievement of certification must be no later than 12 months after hire.
  • Registration with the Iowa Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacist-Intern per Board of Pharmacy rules
  • Tact, diplomacy, accuracy, dependability, and typing.
  • Be proficient in mathematical skills; and successfully complete competency exam with a minimum passing score of 85%.
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical names and dosages.
  • Must have acceptable accuracy in performing tasks of verbal and written communication, keyboard operation and computer skills, as well as interpretation and use of numerical and graphic materials.
  • Must be organized and detail oriented
  • Must follow all laws and regulations related to the practice of pharmacy.
  • Must be able to speak, write and/or read English
  • Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Provider, American Heart Association; or American Red Cross, Professional Rescuer-LIVE class only) via current card prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.
  • Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines
  • Completes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
  • Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
  • Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
  • Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
  • Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
