Under general supervision, the Certified Pharmacy Technician assists the pharmacist in processing medication orders by selecting, assembling, and preparing medications for inpatient (acute care; hospital) and/or outpatient (ambulatory; retail; home infusion) services. This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities within the pharmacy, including accepting new written, faxed, or electronic prescription orders from prescribers or their agents, and accepting new verbal prescription orders for non-controlled drugs as authorized by state law. Key functions involve entering and retrieving information from electronic health records or prescription processing systems, ensuring accurate charge and credit functions for patient billing, preparing and affixing labels, stocking and retrieving prescription drugs from inventory, counting and pouring drugs into containers, and performing non-sterile drug compounding according to USP guidelines. The technician is also responsible for stocking automated drug dispensing cabinets, floor stock, and crash carts, and transporting medications to off-site locations. Operating technology for drug dispensing, such as robotics, is also part of the role. As permitted by state law/regulations, the technician may accept verbal refill authorizations for non-controlled dangerous drugs, clarify prescriptions without professional judgment, and handle non-controlled prescription transfers. The position also involves technician checking of associate technician work prior to dispensing, assisting in the education and precepting of new pharmacy technicians and students, and participating in performance improvement activities. For outpatient services, responsibilities extend to packaging and selling prescription drugs, assisting with insurance claim processing, and performing diagnostic laboratory testing. In inpatient/home infusion settings, the technician performs sterile drug compounding according to USP guidelines and infection-control procedures. Additionally, the technician assists in maintaining a clean and safe work environment and performs other duties in accordance with State Board of Pharmacy rules and regulations, practicing at the top of their respective State Licensing Board Regulations.
