About The Position

The Certified Peer Support Specialist position at Great Lakes Dryhootch is designed for individuals who have lived experience with mental health issues, PTSD, substance use, or co-occurring needs. This role is crucial in providing peer support to both veterans and civilians in Milwaukee County, helping them navigate their recovery journey. The position is based at 1030 E Brady Street, but requires transportation to meet consumers in their communities. The Certified Peer Specialist will work one-on-one with individuals who are beginning their recovery process, utilizing their own experiences to engage and support them. This role is not limited to veterans; anyone with the necessary qualifications and lived experience is encouraged to apply. As a Certified Peer Support Specialist, you will act as a coach or mentor, drawing from your own recovery journey to provide guidance and role modeling. Your primary responsibilities will include linking individuals to various self-determined supports and services, such as traditional mental health services, mutual aid support groups, and other healing activities. You will be expected to maintain regular contact with individuals, manage your own schedule, and document progress accurately in compliance with agency policies and regulations. The position emphasizes a strength-based approach, encouraging participants to become experts in their own experiences and to develop their voice and choice in their recovery. You will assist individuals in exploring their goals, navigating systems of care, and communicating with other service providers to ensure dignity and self-determination in their care. Additionally, you will facilitate educational discussions and recovery-based groups, helping participants recognize early triggers and develop prevention strategies. This role requires active listening, positive communication skills, and a commitment to supporting individuals in their recovery journey.
