General Purpose The Certified Peer Support Specialist serves as a recovery role model and advocate, using lived experience and peer-based engagement to motivate women at Meta House to build comprehensive recovery plans and sustain wellness. This role provides ongoing outreach, group recovery support, and connection to community resources.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Possess personal lived experience with mental health challenges, substance use challenges, or both. This may include experience as a parent or as an adult family member of an individual who has experienced mental health or substance use challenges.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and planning skills.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate with both internal team members and external agencies/partners.
  • Emotional intelligence and resilience when handling crises and long-term exposure to traumatic stories and experiences.
  • Able to work with a diverse client population and understand and respect family dynamics from many cultural viewpoints.
  • Independence, flexibility, and a mature approach to problem solving.
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Computer skills including proficiency in Epic Connect, Microsoft Office Suite, and other applications
  • Able to: Provide proof of vaccination for MMR, Varicella, and annual flu shot.
  • Adherence to a tobacco-free (including vape/e-cigarette) work environment
  • Tolerate occasional hot or cold environments.
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time including alternating sitting or standing at will.
  • Lift and up to 25 pounds on a regular basis and 40 pounds on occasion.
  • Ascend and descend stairs using feet and legs.
  • Bend, stoop, twist, squat, and kneel to perform essential functions.
  • Reach overhead, and at or below shoulder level.
  • Read and enter text or data into a computer or other system.
  • Seize, hold, grasp, turn, or otherwise work with hands.
  • Touch, pick, punch or otherwise working with fingers.
  • Hear, understand, and distinguish speech and/or other sounds to communicate with clients and/or colleagues.
  • Express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information to clients or the public and convey detailed spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • See clearly at approximately 20 inches or less including use of computers or tablet.
  • Visually identify clients and others for reasons including security, confidentiality, and presence in the building
  • Employees who, as part of their regular duties, transport Meta House clients to and from meetings or appointments in their personal vehicle must carry and maintain proof of current Wisconsin automobile liability insurance coverage at or above the minimum state requirements.
  • Employees must present proof of insurance (insurance card or electronic equivalent) upon request by Meta House.
  • Driver’s license, safe driving record, willing to drive agency vehicles and insurable under Meta House’s insurance policy to drive agency vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Use lived experience and recovery, combined with training and supervision, to support clients with mental health or substance use challenges in their recovery.
  • Serve as the primary Peer Support to an assigned caseload. Provide services in coordination with the client’s individual treatment goals noted on the service plan, in collaboration with the treatment team.
  • Plan, develop, and facilitate groups using peer recovery support or peer recovery support activities to enhance recovery.
  • Guide the recovery process and support the client’s recovery choices, goals, and decisions.
  • Provide trauma informed, person-centered, and strength-based peer recovery support services.
  • Provide services in a variety of settings to assist clients in positively engaging in their community.
  • Coach clients to increase their needed skills and assist them in accomplishing tasks and goals noted on the service plan.
  • Connect clients with needed resources, services, and support that will assist the client to enhance their recovery. Assist clients with addressing barriers to their recovery.
  • Mentor clients and use lived experience to provide mutual support and inspire hope.
  • Assist in the development of formal and informal supports, serve as an advocate, mentor, or facilitator for the resolution of challenges.
  • Support client’s use of harm reduction strategies and a variety of pathways to recovery.
  • Engage other supports that facilitate the client’s engagement and active participation in their own recovery.
  • Communicate and collaborate with colleagues via phone, email, and in-person.
  • Perform all required record keeping and paperwork, accurately and timely.
  • Assist with the safe, timely, and organized transportation of clients
  • With supervisor, ensure coverage of all services, including group and individual sessions as assigned and coverage for colleagues' PTO time.
  • Attend required meetings and clinical supervision.
  • Participate in agency or community-based committees or meetings as assigned.
  • Assist with other duties to support general program operations and occasional special programs
  • Other duties as may be periodically or permanently assigned
