About The Position

This position provides quality care to patients of all ages, aligning with the ambulatory care nursing philosophy of Essentia Health. The role involves performing specialized tests and procedures and assisting ophthalmologists in delivering high-quality eye care. The department utilizes a team-based approach, collaborating closely with providers. It specializes in General Ophthalmology, Cornea, Retina, Pediatrics, Glaucoma, and Optometry, offering diverse learning opportunities, diagnostic testing, and treatment options. The team continuously explores new procedures and innovative methods to enhance patient care, with Certified Ophthalmic Assistants (COAs) and Certified Ophthalmic Technicians (COTs) working and training together to foster mutual support and team strength.

Requirements

• Current JCAHPO certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (C.O.T.).
• BCLS within 3 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Welcoming patients, documenting chief complaints, medical history, and medication lists.
• Performing tests such as OCT (optical coherence tomography), visual fields, tonometry (checking eye pressure), and corneal topography.
• Assisting with minor procedures, including preparing injections, cleaning/sterilizing instruments, and maintaining exam rooms.
• Performing contact lens fitting assessments and lensometry to determine eyeglass prescriptions.
• Instructing patients on eye care procedures and medication usage.
