About The Position

A certified ophthalmic assistant (COA) is an entry-level ophthalmic professional who works under the supervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to provide patient care. Since an ophthalmic assistant generally sees patients before the ophthalmologist does, they must prepare the patient for the exam, performing standard tests and taking measurements. Assistant may also prepare and disinfect the equipment that the ophthalmologist uses.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification from the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare patients for examination by performing standard tests and taking measurements.
  • Assist the ophthalmologist by preparing and disinfecting equipment.
  • Provide patient care under the supervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
