The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) functions within the department of nursing as a multi-skilled practitioner functioning in the dual role of patient care and clerk functions at the nurses’ station. Within the patient care role, the practitioner assists patients with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care for the patients and assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) in charge of the team and/or unit. Thus, the CNA works with nurses to assist in provision of delegated aspects of nursing care for individual patients. This practitioner organizes, within the specified work period, his/her time in order to maximize delivery of nursing care. Within the role of clerk functions this practitioner is responsible for the following: admission, discharge, pre-procedure, post-procedure and transfer. The CNA while in this role is responsible for unit-phone, call-light, visual monitor, and telemetry alarm reporting to the Registered Nurse.
