The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long term care. This role provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). The NA is expected to have knowledge of and deliver age-appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident as per the care plan. As a member of the nursing team, the NA is accountable for following infection prevention and control policies and Personal Protective Equipment use. Responsibilities include assisting with basic health care needs such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psychosocial support. The NA also assists residents with transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct techniques and equipment, and provides range of motion and passive exercises. Tasks related to food preparation and dining, including assisting with meals and snacks, providing water and supplements, and creating a positive dining experience, are also part of the role. The NA may aid providers and nursing staff with procedures, document resident interactions and outcomes, and communicate changing conditions to the charge nurse. Collecting non-invasive body fluid specimens and gathering vital signs are also included. Additionally, the NA provides housekeeping and laundry services to help residents maintain clean living areas and assists with wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation. Participation in departmental/organization committees and task forces may also be required.
