About The Position

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) supports the delivery of school health services under the supervision of a licensed school nurse. The CNA assists in providing direct care to students, maintaining a safe and healthy school environment, and supporting students’ access to learning by attending to health-related needs throughout the school day.

Requirements

  • Understanding of basic nursing care, ADL assistance, and infection control practices.
  • Ability to follow written health plans and adhere to nurse delegation procedures.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with students of diverse needs.
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in emergencies.
  • Respect for confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Physical ability to lift, transfer, and assist students as required.
  • Hold current certification as a certified nurse aide in Virginia
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a school, pediatric, or community health setting.
  • Training in safe lifting, mobility support, and specialized health procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct student care, including assistance with personal hygiene, toileting, feeding, mobility, and other activities of daily living (ADLs) according to individualized health plans.
  • Support students with chronic health conditions by helping monitor symptoms and assisting with routine tasks as delegated by the school nurse.
  • Carry out delegated medical procedures such as taking vital signs, assisting with medications, blood glucose monitoring, and basic first aid.
  • Document health services accurately and promptly in student records following district protocols and confidentiality requirements (FERPA/HIPAA).
  • Respond to student health concerns by providing basic first aid and alerting the school nurse to any changes in condition or emergencies.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness by knowing student emergency plans, participating in drills, and helping implement emergency procedures.
  • Support safe arrival, transitions, and dismissal for students with mobility or medical needs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized health office , including restocking supplies and disinfecting equipment and surfaces.
  • Collaborate with school staff to support inclusive instructional and extracurricular activities for students with medical or personal-care needs.
  • Communicate professionally with students, families, and staff while maintaining confidentiality and respect.
