Provides a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause to include primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life, and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections in accordance with the American College of Nurse-Midwives and the Texas Board of Nursing scope of practice.

  • Provides direct clinical services and management of mothers and babies as defined in the standing orders, policies, procedures and protocols for the certified nurse midwife.
  • Utilizes prescriptive privileges as allowed by the Texas Board of Nursing and regulatory requirements.
  • Documents all prescriptions in the patient's medical record.
  • Obtains patient health histories and completes physical examinations.
  • Documents findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings.
  • Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests.
  • Performs approved therapeutic procedures based upon patients' clinical status.
  • Explains the necessity, preparation, nature and anticipated effects of procedure(s) to patient, family, staff, and healthcare learners.
  • Documents patient preparation and response to procedure(s).
  • Provides patient and family education and formulates and implements prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, newborn and interconceptional care.
  • Provides health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling in partnership with women and families in diverse settings.
  • Performs and participates in quality/performance improvement activities and clinical research.
  • Utilizes current research and evidence-based decision-making in all clinical practice.
  • Incorporates clinical research findings in the development and implementation of standards of care.
  • Serves as an expert consultant to nursing, members of the healthcare team and to the larger community.
  • Participates in and supports accreditation, compliance, and regulatory activities of the organization.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations and continuing education.
  • Masters' degree in a relevant field
  • 2 years of experience in a related role
  • Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) certification
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license
