About The Position

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) position at The University of Chicago is a vital role within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, which boasts a robust team of 136 clinical providers. This department is dedicated to delivering high-quality clinical care, teaching, and research, with a significant volume of outpatient visits, deliveries, and surgeries each year. The CNM will utilize best practices and their extensive knowledge of patient care to make autonomous decisions regarding assessment, diagnosis, and the initiation of delegated medical treatments. The scope of practice encompasses family support, discharge planning, staff education, consultation, and research, ensuring comprehensive care for patients throughout their reproductive health journey. In this role, the CNM will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of midwifery care for antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn patients. This includes performing physical exams, managing labor and spontaneous delivery, conducting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and prescribing appropriate interventions and medications. The CNM will also oversee quality and safety projects within Labor and Delivery, ensuring adherence to quality standards and reviewing project deliverables. Collaboration is key, as the CNM will act as a liaison among nurses, patients, families, physicians, and community resources to coordinate patient care effectively. The position requires active participation in professional development, quality assurance initiatives, and health education within the community. The CNM will also engage in teaching students and residents, design patient education programs, and evaluate care goals based on safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness. A deep understanding of adverse drug reactions, particularly in vulnerable populations, is essential, as is the ability to develop and coordinate training and professional development activities for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs). The CNM will perform other related duties as needed, contributing to the overall mission of the department to provide exceptional care and advance the field of midwifery.
