The 20 bed Thoracic Cardiovascular ICU (TCV ICU) serves patients who undergo such cardiac, vascular, and thoracic surgical procedures as CABG, valve replacement/repair, heart transplantation, and lung transplantation. Patients include those who require re-do sternotomy, as well as mini-sternotomy, TAVR procedures, esophagectomy, pneumonectomy, aortic aneurysm repair, and CABG/valve combination procedures. Nurses care for patients who require a variety of mechanical circulatory support devices, as well as ECMO. Patients are recovered in the TCV ICU postoperatively, where they stay for a minimum of 24 hours or longer, as needed to wean ventilatory support and vasoactive infusions. Apply Today! Spends majority of time in the delivery of support services or activities, typically under supervision. Opportunities for progression outside this career stream are typically limited without additional education or significant training and experience. ​ Specialty license or certification required which is acquired through training and/or experience. This career stream will be most commonly applied to patient care areas. Requires basic knowledge of job procedures and tools obtained through work experience and require vocational or technical education.​ Works under moderate supervision. Problems are typically of a routine nature but may at times require interpretation or deviation from standard procedures. ​ Communicates information that requires some explanation or interpretation​.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Experience: No experience required
  • Licensure: American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required.
  • Certified to practice as a Nurse Aide in the Commonwealth of Virginia OR must meet one of the following criteria (required): (1) Successful completion of the UVa PCT Education Program OR Successful completion of another PCT Education Program that has been approved by NPDS. (2) Documented proof of at least 1 year of recent (within past 2 years) experience in a similar PCT role from an outside institution. Candidate must successfully complete a written exam and must successfully demonstrate clinical skills during 6 month probationary period. (3) Passage of a nationally recognized and accredited PCT Certification exam. (Example - National Healthcareer Association - C-PCT). Present Certificate as verification.
  • OR must meet one of the following criteria (required): (1) Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Medical/Surgical Clinical Experience and Didactic are exempt from the Certified Nurse Aide requirement. (2) EMT or above certification. Candidate will complete the UVA PCT Course within 6 month probationary period (3) Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
