Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. The Medication Assistant (MA) serves as caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. This role involves delivering age-appropriate care, assisting with basic health care needs like bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, vital signs, and psycho-social support. MAs also help with transferring, re-positioning, and walking using correct techniques, and provide range of motion and passive exercises. Tasks related to food preparation and dining, including assisting residents with meals and snacks, are also part of the role. A key responsibility is administering prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within state scope of practice. Documentation of resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary information is required, along with communicating changes and concerns to the charge nurse. The MA collects non-invasive body fluid specimens and gathers vital signs, and provides housekeeping and laundry services. Participation in wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident involvement, and potentially departmental/organization committees are also expected.
