About The Position

Boulder Care is hiring a Certified Medical Assistant for a 100% remote, temporary role with a 6-month contract. We are looking for individuals who: Are authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship Have two years’ experience as a Certified Medical Assistant (active CMA or equivalent national certification) Are interested in full-time work (40 hours a week) with a Monday-Friday schedule of 9:00am - 6:00pm Pacific Time (12:00pm - 9:00pm Eastern Time) About us Boulder Care is an award-winning digital clinic for addiction medicine, recognized for both innovation and high quality of patient care. About the role The Medical Assistant (MA) is an essential clinical team member, directly supporting Providers and Nurses while serving as a vital patient liaison. This role manages care coordination, pharmacy logistics, and administrative workflows within our telemedicine-based addiction medicine program, ensuring efficient operations and high-quality patient care.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2+ years experience as a Certified Medical Assistant
  • Active, nationally recognized Medical Assistant Certification
  • Certification must be held at the time of hire and maintained in good standing, including completing all required renewals prior to expiration
  • To support a smooth transition, a 60-day grace period will be provided for employees to obtain or reactivate their MA certification, if needed
  • Minimum of one year experience in navigating the behavioral health system, substance use treatment, patient advocacy, care coordination, crisis hotline, peer coaching, or other relevant experience as a liaison between patients and care teams
  • Exceptional clinical skills working with a care team to achieve outcomes enriching people's lives by achieving sustained recovery, and the ongoing evaluation and iteration of our care model as the company grows
  • Expertise in toggling between multiple platforms in a fast-paced remote environment
  • Must be comfortable with technology and have experience with common business tools (such as G-Suite, video meetings, and spreadsheets)
  • Extensive experience with scheduling and maneuvering through multiple schedules
  • A passion for serving the needs of people with addiction and mental health challenges, using non-stigmatizing, non-judgmental person-first language
  • Knowledge of terminology used in healthcare, especially addiction medicine
  • Team-focused and collaborative. Advocates tirelessly for patients and Care Team members
  • Must reside in one of the following states: AL, AK, AZ, CO, FL, GA, KS, ID, IN, MD, MI, NM, NY, NC, NV, OH, OR, PA, TN, TX, WA, and WY
  • Changes to working location require pre-approval from People Operations and are not guaranteed
  • Office Requirements: Boulder teammates working with sensitive information must have a dedicated, private workspace with a lockable door and high-speed internet to maintain a secure, distraction-free environment, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and confidentiality standards

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working remote / telemedicine strongly preferred
  • Previous experience with Substance Use Disorder and Harm Reduction
  • Lived experience with SUD or AUD recovery (your own or a loved one)
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

Responsibilities

  • Patient Liaison/Triage: Serve as the primary non-clinical contact for patients, handling routine inquiries, and efficiently triaging urgent medical or clinical needs to the Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Referral Management: Coordinate, track, and follow up on referrals to external specialists, counseling services, and higher levels of care to ensure seamless continuity.
  • Intake Preparation: Proactively support new patients by completing necessary intake paperwork and preparation ahead of their initial clinical appointment.
  • RN Support: Actively manage patient requests and follow up on tasks delegated by the RN team, prioritizing clinical flow efficiency.
  • Documentation: Accurately enter and update patient demographics, medical history, lab results, and communication logs in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Pharmacy Resolution/Assistance: Resolve pharmacy questions and concerns from patients.
  • Prescription Verification: Verify the successful electronic transmission of prescriptions, especially SUD medications, to the patient's preferred pharmacy.
  • Pharmacy Communication: Serve as the central point of contact for pharmacies regarding prescription clarification, refill inquiries, and troubleshooting fill delays, escalating clinical questions to the appropriate staff.
  • Drug Screen Management: Support the ordering and tracking of lab tests from outside sources and accurately upload all results (including point-of-care test results) into the patient's EHR.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure all lab and testing documentation is complete, accurate, and ready for clinical review.
  • Scheduling: Manage the scheduling and rescheduling of patient appointments as directed by the RNs and Providers.
  • Workflow Improvement: Identify bottlenecks and suggest improvements to telemedicine care coordination workflows to boost efficiency and patient experience.
  • Compliance: Maintain strict adherence to all HIPAA, and relevant state/federal regulations governing patient data and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment.

  • Sick time will accrue at a rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, and Boulder will provide hardware (computer, monitor, and keyboard) to support remote work.
