The Medical Assistant, Certified, is an integral member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, providing direct patient care and performing routine administrative and patient care supportive duties in a Health System medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensure the clinic/office runs smoothly.

Requirements

  • Good customer service skills
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Working knowledge of sterile techniques and special procedures applicable to work performed
  • Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients
  • Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene, and basic health and safety precautions applicable for work in a clinic setting
  • Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions
  • Age specific competencies
  • Proficiency in daily clinic preparation process, including registration, scheduling, charge posting, and order entry
  • Ability to document and communicate pertinent information
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and clinic staff
  • Typing skills
  • Medical terminology
  • For Levels II and III: Ability to independently seek out resources and work collaboratively
  • High school or GED graduation
  • Certification by AAMA, AMT, NHA-CCMA, NCMA or ARMA
  • BLS required
  • Level I: No experience required
  • Level II: 1 year of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting
  • Level III: 2 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting
  • Level IV: 3 years of clinical experience as a Medical Assistant, Certified in a clinical setting
  • Applicants must meet all requirements set forth in the Medical Assistant, Certified (CMA/RMA) Ladder Program document for Levels II, III, and IV

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a medical assistant program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)

Responsibilities

  • Take medical histories and record vital signs
  • Explain treatment procedures to patients
  • Prepare patients for examinations and procedures
  • Assist the medical and nursing staff during examination and procedures
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens
  • Perform basic laboratory tests in the clinic/office
  • Take electrocardiograms
  • Remove sutures/staples
  • Change sterile and non-sterile dressings
  • Promote patient/family understanding of educational content and their involvement in the plan of care
  • Document in the patient record
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies
  • Perform instrument processing, high-level disinfection, and sterilization of medical instruments
  • Telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician
  • Authorize drug refills as directed
  • Perform other clinical functions as delegated and supervised by the physician
  • Greet patients
  • Answer telephones
  • Schedule appointments, including arriving appointments in MaestroCare
  • Check out patients
  • Perform referral scheduling
  • Arrange for hospital admissions and laboratory services
  • Update and file patient medical records
  • Fill out insurance forms
  • Handle billing and bookkeeping, including receiving copays and collections on account balances
  • Handle correspondence
  • Order clinical and clerical supplies and forms
  • Perform other administrative duties as directed
  • May be requested to be a liaison for clinic activities such as Joint Commission and falls and/or participate in clinic committees
