About The Position

The ED CMA/MA performs routine patient care support duties in the Emergency Department to assist medical and/or or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients to expedite throughput and patient care. This role functions within the ED under the direction of the ED Physician and/or ED APP and the ED resource nurse. The CMA/MA is responsible for maintaining equipment, supplies, and providing patient care under the direct supervision of the medical and nursing staff.

Requirements

  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) – National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days – American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Allied Health (AAH)
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) – National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) within 6 months – American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
  • Education: H.S. Diploma/GED
  • Work Experience: 1+ year preferred

Responsibilities

  • Room patients and collect pertinent information related to chief complaint, vitals, and medication reconciliation
  • Provide patient education or instructions using pamphlets, brochures, or handouts as directed by RN or provider
  • Call in non‑narcotic prescriptions or substitutions to pharmacy
  • Accept telephone, verbal, or written orders following Order Mode/Entry policy; ensure provider authentication/co‑signature
  • Complete forms such as FMLA, DOT, IPPE, AWV, etc.
  • Perform venipuncture for specimen collection
  • Process CLIA‑waived lab tests (site‑specific per service line)
  • Perform simple wound care after RN or provider assessment
  • Administer saline solutions for simple wound irrigation
  • Witness procedural consent and complete procedure time‑out form
  • Clean instruments and equipment
  • Obtain fetal heart tones
  • Apply slings or splints under provider direction/supervision
  • Suture wounds in non‑cosmetic areas under provider direction/supervision
  • Remove sutures from well‑healed wounds under provider supervision
  • Administer medications per provider order
  • Provide written instructions regarding procedures, medications, or follow‑up as directed by provider
  • Retrieve and provide condition‑specific education from approved sources per provider direction
  • Assist ED provider with direct patient care within scope of practice
  • Facilitate patient throughput in the ED, including rooming, transfers, and discharges
  • Obtain vitals and collect data for patients to be seen by provider
  • Assist providers with procedures
  • Perform EKGs, ear irrigation, vision screening, dressing changes, wound care, sutures, splints, point‑of‑care testing, medication administration, fetal heart tones, and lab specimen collection as ordered
  • Clean equipment
