About The Position

The ED CMA/MA performs routine patient care support duties in the Emergency Department to assist medical and/or or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients to expedite throughput and patient care. This role functions within the ED under the direction of the ED Physician and/or ED APP and the ED resource nurse. The CMA/MA is responsible for maintaining equipment, supplies, and providing patient care under the direct supervision of the medical and nursing staff.

Requirements

  • Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) - National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AAH) - American Allied Health (AAH)
  • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) - National Healthcareer Association (NHA)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AMT) - American Medical Technologists (AMT)
  • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (ARMA) within 6 months - American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA)
  • H.S. Diploma/GED

Responsibilities

  • Rooming patients: collecting pertinent information regarding chief complaint, vitals and medication reconciliation
  • Patient Education or Instructions: Using pamphlets, brochures or handouts as directed by RN or Provider to reinforce education provided by Provider or RN.
  • May call non-narcotic scripts to pharmacy/new prescription substitutions
  • Accepting telephone, verbal or written orders. Must follow Order Mode/Entry policy. Provider authentication (co-signature) of order must occur.
  • Fill out forms: ex: FMLA, DOT, IPPE, AWV, etc.
  • Venipuncture for Specimen Collection
  • Process CLIA Waived lab test (site specific per service line)
  • Simple Wound Care (Wound to be assessed by RN or Provider prior to care) A simple wound is a break in the continuity of the skin limited in depth at the sub-cutaneous fatty tissue, that does not affect the underlying structures (muscle, bone, joints, major arteries, nerves, tendons) and without significant loss of tissue. Administration of saline solutions for simple wound irrigation
  • Procedural consent witness & complete procedure time out form
  • Cleaning of instruments/equipment
  • Obtain fetal heart tones
  • Application of slings/splints under provider direction/supervision
  • Sutures wounds in non-cosmetic areas under provider direction/supervision. Removes sutures from well healed wounds under provider supervision
  • Administer medications per the provider order
  • Provide patient with written instructions regarding procedures, medications or follow up instructions at the direction of the provider. CMA staff may retrieve and provide condition specific education from the internet, internal website or printed materials per the provider directions and orders
  • Assist ED provider with direct patient care within scope of practice Facilitates patient throughput into and out of the ED by assisting with patient care, rooming, transfers and discharges as needed
  • Obtain vitals and collect data for patients to be seen by provider
  • Assists providers with procedures
  • Perform: EKG, ear irrigation, vision screen, dressing changes, wound care, sutures, splints, point of care testing, medication administration, fetal heart tones, collecting lab specimens as ordered, clean equipment, train new staff.
