Benefits Eligible Full-Time Benefit Eligible Work Shift Variable - 12 Hour Shift (United States of America) Department 7741 Dialysis-Visalia In an out-patient or in-patient setting, the Certified Hemodialysis Technician (CHT) performs essential duties to support patients and other health care team members before, during, and after hemodialysis treatments. The CHT is under the supervision of a registered nurse when patient care is provided. The CHT performs essential duties to ensure proper and safe function of the dialysis water treatment delivery system.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up water treatment system and conducts all testing required by AAMI Standards before any patients are dialyzed.
  • Sets up machines according to patient prescription (i.e. correct bath, dialysate flow, etc).
  • Collects patient data pre and post dialysis.
  • Reports this data to the registered nurse.
  • Completes flow sheets prior to patient discharge.
  • Enters documentation into electronic documentation system.
  • Initiates and terminates dialysis as ordered via appropriate patient access site.
  • Monitors patients during dialysis.
  • Unusual findings are reported immediately to RN.
  • Appropriately responds to equipment alarms, adjusts alarm limits and corrects the alarm condition as appropriate.
  • Administers Lidocaine, Heparin and normal saline under the supervision of an RN or MD and within the limitations established by law, regulations or usual practice within the state.
  • Cleans and dresses fistula and graft access sites using appropriate techniques.
  • Institutes basic CPR in event of cardiac or pulmonary emergencies.
  • Cleans and disinfects machines after dialysis following procedures.
  • Identifies issues with equipment.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel regarding any equipment safety concerns.
  • Quickly removes equipment from service as appropriate, tags for repair, with necessary information noted on the tag.
  • Assists in training of new technicians as required.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform water safety management of the water treatment system and identify problems, taking appropriate action to assure the safety of patients and staff.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to perform care and complete tasks adhering to infection prevention requirements including those specific to dialysis patients and work environment.
  • Demonstrates effective, timely communication with various team members.
  • Respectful of roles and responsibility.
  • Is up-to-date regarding clinic, Kaweah Health, and general information provided or endorsed by leadership and the clinical educator.
  • Delivers care in a non-judgmental and nondiscriminatory manner that preserves patient autonomy, dignity and rights.
  • Inventories and stocks necessary supplies including oxygen tanks.
  • Calls for replacements as needed.
  • Obtains water cultures monthly only as assigned.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and services appropriate to the population served on the assigned unit or work area.
  • Knowledgeable of growth and development for all patient/family cultural, linguistic, spiritual, gender, and age specific needs.
  • Able to effectively communicate and care for patient and family as reflected in the Plan for Provision of Care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
