About The Position

The CVOR First Assistant provides a highly technical & knowledge based skill-set to assist the surgeon to carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient.The CVOR First Assistant is capable of working independently, or codependently with surgeons, to finalize the surgery according to the surgeon's plan of care.The CVOR First Assistant prepares and maintains the surgical area, provides scrubbing duties and delivers first assistant intraoperative technical functions to the physician during procedures, assists the RN in technical functions related to patient care and assists in the training of others and functions as a resource within the department. The CVOR First Assistant has the knowledge and experience to perform endoscopic or open-procedure intraoperative harvesting of the saphenous vein.The CVOR First Assistant performs endovascular & open revascularization of the peripheral & central vascular systems.

Requirements

  • High School education or equivalent.
  • Completion of Certified Surgical Assisting Program or have completed the requirements set by and have been certified by the: National Board of Surgical Technician and Surgical Assistant (NBSTA) or American Board of Surgical Assistant. (ABSA) or National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistant (NCCSA)
  • Certification as a First Assistant by one of following: National Board of Surgical Technician and Surgical Assistant (NBSTA) or American Board of Surgical Assistant. (ABSA) or National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistant (NCCSA)
  • American Heart Association BLS
  • Endoscopic Saphenous Vein Harvesting sanctioned by American College of Surgeon's (to obtain within 2 year of hire)

Responsibilities

  • Confirms what procedure(s) will be completed.
  • Determines specific equipment needed per surgical procedure.
  • Reviews case load and studies and prepares for pending surgical procedures.
  • Reviewing preference cards to confirm procedure and special needs and participating in Universal Protocol steps including the "time out."
  • Appropriately select and place diagnostic tests for reference as applicable.
  • Assists in moving and positioning the patient (is familiar with positioning per each surgeon's preference, positioning devices and equipment).
  • Performs operative shave prep, scrub, or other patient care tasks as assigned by the RN.
