About The Position

The Certified Emergency Department (ED) Technician-Paramedic performs nonprofessional direct and indirect patient care activities under the supervision of a registered professional nurse and/or licensed medical provider. The Certified ED Tech-Paramedic assists medical and nursing staff with a variety of procedures in an emergency setting under applicable scope of practice based on certification.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Registered WV Paramedic Certification.
  • Registered National Paramedic Certification required if licensed after 1/1/2019 or if licensure was obtained prior to 1/1/2019 but not maintained.
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Completion of an accredited Paramedic education program.
  • Two years of college in an applicable course of study (nursing, biology, physical therapy, or sports medicine) OR Two years’ experience in an Emergency Department or pre-hospital setting.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Responsibilities

  • Performs emergency medical services in accordance with the following conditions: Hospital Emergency Department, while moving a patient between the ED and another part of the hospital, only under the direction and supervision of physician, physician assistant designated by a physician, or an RN designated by a physician.
  • Observes and reports all patient concerns/changes in condition to a registered nurse immediately.
  • Assists the Registered Nurse with admission, transfer, discharge and general patient care duties.
  • Records the vital signs, assists in personal hygiene and other patient comfort measures. Records oral intake and outputs (temperature, blood pressure and other monitoring).
  • Assists in specimen collection and other activities of assigned patients.
  • Assists in indirect patient care by maintaining a clean and safe environment to help prevent and/or control infections and to provide for safety of patients, visitors and employees.
  • Reports all necessary equipment repairs to appropriate personnel according to departmental procedure in a timely manner.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedure.
  • Communicates with RN regarding any nutrition issues, such as poor appetite or verbalized lack of understanding of diet changes.
  • Assists department with administrative tasks to support the department operations.
  • Answers patient call bell and relays message to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs assigned tests such as glucose monitoring and maintains quality control testing & logs, according to department policy.
  • Performs airway, cardiac, and trauma management based on scope of practice.
  • Assists with emergency childbirth.
  • Ability to perform EKG, but cannot interpret data.
  • Administers medication with physician written order.
  • Ability to perform nasotracheal intubation, bipap administration and management, nasogastric tube replacement, orogastric tube replacement, eye irrigation with Morgan lens.
  • Additional duties as assigned based on scope of practice.
