About The Position

A Dog Trainer/Puppy Preschool Assistant Trainer focuses on helping people train their dogs to be well mannered companions and family members. Trainers must have excellent communication skills and be able to create rapport with dogs and owners. Dog Trainers teach Puppy Kindergarten and Beginning Obedience classes, and Advanced Obedience and Specialty classes with approval of dog school manager. Puppy Preschool Assistant Trainers assist Trainers with basic manners training and socialization of puppies during Puppy Preschool. OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES: Knowledge about dogs, including basic ethology. Knowledge about various training methods and the skills to apply them appropriately. Knowledge about training tools and the skills to apply them appropriately. Clients need to be your highest priority. Be available to clients before and after classes, and during the week to answer questions. Treat each client and dog with respect. Listen to what clients need and do your best to give appropriate training options to meet their needs. Check in classes on the first night of class. Be willing to substitute if possible for other instructors. Trainers must be available to teach one evening a week. Preschool Assistant Trainers must be available to work week day mornings. Attend periodic dog training meetings. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or Equivalent Experience in working with or training dogs other than your own.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Experience in working with or training dogs other than your own.
  • Ability to teach various skill levels of dogs and owners.
  • Ability to work with any size dog.
  • Ability to accommodate owners with special needs.
  • Understand basic dog training methods and tools, and how to use them appropriately.
  • Ability to lead multiple classes with multiple dog/handler teams in one evening.
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism.
  • Ability to collect data, establish fact, draw valid conclusions and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work well with the public and coworkers and instill trust in your abilities.
  • Ability to work confidently with all dogs and handler teams.
  • Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, orally, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in different situations.
  • Training certificates and registration with respected groups/associations.
