About The Position

Works under general supervision of a Registered Nurse to, assists with providing care and delegated activities of treatment to patients with renal failure. This position performs duties as assigned by the Charge Nurse and Registered Nurse.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT and
  • Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT) or
  • Certified Hemodialysis Biomedical Technician (CHBT) or
  • Certified Water Specialist (CWS)

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties at all times under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and within limitations established in accordance with the institutional policies and applicable state and federal laws and regulations. (BONENT Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing Technology, Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC) and Texas Dialysis Technician Requirements Dialysis Technician Central,
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics - ensure all areas are safe and clean.
  • Use appropriate safety measures including personal protective equipment as necessary
  • Clean, disinfect, and rinse dialysis machines in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Complete/document quality control logs throughout the day and after all treatments, as required.
  • Conduct all tasks necessary for preparation for dialysis treatment and document where appropriate
  • Terminate dialysis treatments per unit protocol, and within scope of practice and as allowed by state regulations.
  • Monitor patients during dialysis treatments, report untoward symptoms to dialyzing nurse.
  • Conduct machine safety checks, report any change or unusual findings to the Charge nurse and Biomed.
  • Complete water testing on the Central RO as well as the portable RO systems prior to a treatment start daily and as directed.
  • Obtain necessary pre and post treatment vital signs and weight. Report unusual findings to the registered nurse.
  • Perform vascular access cannulation and report any difficulties in cannulation or unusual findings to registered nurse.
  • Perform vascular access evaluation pre-treatment and report unusual findings to the registered nurse.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems and provide intervention allowed within his scope of practice as prescribed by physician's order or as directed.
  • Monitor patients' response to dialysis therapy and report any unusual findings to registered nurse.
  • Obtain vital signs prior to reinfusion; perform all relevant functions necessary for the discontinuation of treatment
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to established procedures for patients with permanent accesses.
  • Evaluate patient sitting blood pressure prior to termination of venous access.
  • Obtain Hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings to needle exit sites only (Central Line Dressing only to be completed by registered nurse)
  • Responsible for calculating and entry of individual patients' dialysis machine programming for Ultrafiltration (UF) goal; treatment time; Sodium (Na) modeling; and UF modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate Machine safety alarms are enabled during setup of dialysis machines
  • Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters onto the Hemodialysis flowsheet.
  • Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition directly to the registered nurse
  • Observe patient and report unusual patient status
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, equipment, treatment bays, and surrounding area between treatments according to facility policy.
  • Perform all required pretreatment dialysis machine alarm testing
  • Ensure that all blood spills immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize efficiently, and utilize supplies and equipment to prevent wastage. Review of all dialysis supplies-replenishing, and reviewing expiration dates
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Enters all treatment data into the designated clinical application or logs accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Collect, label, appropriately prepare and send samples according to required laboratory specifications
  • Transports patients to and from dialysis unit
  • Transport dialysis equipment to and from dialysis or other areas as needed
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
