About The Position

The Certified Dental Assistant must perform all duties in accordance with standards and methods generally accepted within the field of dental assistant services, and in compliance with all Federal and State policy and regulations. The Dental Assistant will assist the dentist during dental procedures, assist in maintaining accountability and sterilization of instruments, become proficient in Bureau Electronic Medical Records System [BEMR] (the inmate electronic medical record), conduct him/herself in a professional manner around inmates, and perform any other tasks deemed necessary by the dentist while adhering to the general practice of a dental assistant.

Requirements

  • Must have specialty training from a licensed dentist and/or certification from an accredited Dental Assistant school.
  • Three (3) letters of reference.
  • Proof of Hepatitis B vaccination
  • Annual proof of tuberculin skin test or chest radiography
  • Must hold current CPR certification from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience providing Dental Assistant services.
  • Copies of all certifications and resumes must be forwarded with your application.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Dental Officer in restorative, oral surgery, periodontics, prosthetics, examinations, and emergency cases.
  • Retrieves patient records, escorts patients to the appropriate dental area, seats and prepares them for treatment, and provides dismissal and follow-up instructions.
  • Prepares dental instruments, materials, medications, treatment rooms, and equipment for procedures; passes instruments, retracts tissues, irrigates, and operates the aspirator.
  • Abides by FCI Elktons infection control policies.
  • Provides prevention duties and chairside assistance to the dentist.
  • Cleans, polishes, and/or oils equipment according to manufacturers' or biomedical recommendations.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments, using autoclave techniques.
  • Prepares sterile trays, packs, sutures, etc.
  • Maintains a number of recurring reports, including those concerning materials and equipment.
  • Properly stores and maintains adequate supplies in the dental clinic.
  • Requisitions dental laboratory work.
  • Greets, receives, and prepares patients for treatment.
  • Observes patient responses, provides dental health education, conducts dental screenings, and performs routine oral prophylaxis using hand and mechanical instruments.
  • Lays out instruments and materials needed for treatment.
  • Provides chair-side assistance during oral examination and restorative treatments.
  • Passes instruments and materials to and retrieves them from the dentist.
  • Operates the oral evacuator and suction tip to keep the area of operation clear.
  • Retracts tissue, cheek, and tongue.
  • Scans dental treatment plans into the Bureaus Electronic Medical Record (BEMR).
  • Relays post-treatment instructions to the patient from the dentist.
  • Completes radiographs, marks them with identifying information, and uploads them into the inmates BEMR file.
  • Uses lead aprons and shields as protection against radiation.
  • Other job-related responsibilities required for a dental assistant.
